What the new abortion law means

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) - New York State enacted one of the nation's strongest protections for abortion rights Tuesday.

This was a move that state leaders said was needed to safeguard those rights should the United States Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade.

Though abortion is legal in New York, the bill does shift state law. One major change this year, permits for a late-term abortion to preserve the health of the mother.

Supporters said this aligns with Roe v. Wade; while opponents, on the other hand, said it does wrong by stretching access to late-term abortions.

"A woman was entitled to have an abortion up until the time of viabiltity and that word viabiltiy means up until a fetus could live outside of the womb," said Chemung County Legislator Christina Sonsire. "It also said that a woman could have an abortion past the age of viability to protect the womans life."

According to Sonsire, this is a movement to align federal and state law. "The courts and not the legislators that are best suited to decide matters of abortion, " Sonsire said. "So, it's going to be the courts with the final say."

As a pro-life, what do you think of the abortion law?
